CA 95476 Cycle News North Kenyon T ''""S The Tide SAN FRANCISCO, CAL., NOV. 30 Al Kenyon turned the tides of luckless effort tonight and won his first Cow Palace indoor with a clean sweep. The team near b Bultaco rider has had more than his fair share of problems in the past ut set th.e pace Wit WinS in the heat, semi, trophy dash and . h .. main event. I t was Ron Kole thc winner in thc first event with newcomer Chris Hudson beating out Ascot Novicc champ Skip Aksland. Team Fat and Al Kcnyon pulled up for thc second Iteat showing that his fast time effort at the Oakland Indoor National was no fluke and that his CMS products frame was indeed a hot set-up. Behind Kenyon, Jerry Kole was second. - Somc heroes were eliminated. John Gennai, the Western Region champ, seized his engine. ~dy Scott and his trick Yamaha failed to do the trick and sat out the night. The same went for Jim Odom, Frank Gillespie, Bill Morgan, Nick Theroux, Larry Drew and Kirk Tardiff. The competition was pretty hot stuff. Two newcomers won their heats, Randy Searl the third and Steve Eklund the fourth. Del Silva won the fUth oxer Western Region Novice champ Nick Nazzisi, and Jim Folcy took the sixth over Dennis "Kool-Aid" Brennan. Oakland indoor winncr Dave Hansen won the seventh heat from Dennis Robinson, and reigning American Indoor champ Rick Hocking was first in the final heat over Jeff Hammond. The three semi's turned out to be a crashing contest. So much so that the was rerun at the end of the semi series. So the first semi was actually the second, won by Hansen and his Champion race frame Honda onc-lunger. Hansen again looked likc. the obvious pick and turned in a very good time, beating out Kirk King, Jerry Kole and Chuck Miller by a wide margin. Besting Hansen's efforts in the third semi was Kenyon and his well prepared CMS Products Sonny Kenyon Bultaco. AI's time was nearly half a second faster than Hansen. Thcn came the Hock. Rick and his Champion Racc frame Yamaha turned the trick nearly a second faster than Kenyon and Ite was then, obviously, the man to beat for the long 20 lap finale. Also making it to the main were Dennis Robinson, Chris Hudson and the fonner National Scrambles champ, Jim Foley. Half·time en tertainment turned out to be some very fine radio controlled minature cars set up like Indy and Can-Am machines. Watching the Sunoco Special crash into the Indy speedster made for great laughs. Trophy Dash time brought out three Novices against the formidable "Cupertino Crusher", AI Kenyon. Once Cllptllin of Team F8t. AI Kenyon. rode to win when Rick Hocking a8Shed. fU"St had to be called back into the infield after three attempts to start. It .,_ d was rewardcd miss. _ ,~" Consolation, Steve Foster led the way for the better part, but Novice Dana Perri got the better of him for the win, with another Expert, Gary Lozano, taking thc third place spot over Gary Orlando and the Consolation Kid, Don McIver. - When the riders for the main event wcre informed it would be 20 laps, thcre was much moaning and groaning. Although that's less than two miles overall, it takes relatively little time for the fast leaders to overtake and pass. Getting by the slower troops and the fast circling hurts both in mental and physical strain. Rick Hocking took the advantage at the onset over Kenyon and Hanscn. All threc stayed close for the first threc laps until Hansen bobbled coming off the last corner and headed for thc infield. Dave's reflexes saved it and he got pointed in the righ t direction, but running ov.er one marker put him back to ninth. Mcanwhile, both Hocking and Kenyon were moving away from the pack with Hocking slowly moving away from Kenyon. It stayed this way for sixteen laps with Jeff Hammond holding third over Robinson and Bruce Brown trying to hold back Dave Hansen, not too successfully. On the seventeenth lap, the stuff hit the fan. Hocking was lapping through the back of the pack when he suddenly encountcred a faltering Dennis Robinson. Hocking made his move to pass and ran right into the Yamaha, full force. The rcsulting crash was horrendous, but Hocking remounted, - and, with a push from Dave Souza, he managed to finish eighth. All thc while, AI Kenyon kept up his steady surge and won by a very wide margin, circling the mess with a wide berth.
