restart, although he was a lap
down.
Smith and Coolbeth picked up
where they left off and they were
joined by Brad Baker on his
Harley-Davidson Motor Com-
pany XR750. Baker looked to be
Defending GNC 1 Champion
Jared Mees' day had started
bad, and his bad luck came
back with a vengeance as his
Las Vegas Harley-Davidson/
Rogers Racing XR750 coasted
to a stop at the end of his first
lap. Things got marginally better
when Kayl Kolkman's Kolkman
Racing Kawasaki broke on lap
USC Racing/Hart Racing's
Henry Wiles led the 18-rider field
off the line, but Smith quickly
took control. Zanotti Racing/
Harley-Davidson-backed Kenny
Coolbeth was right in Smith's
wheel tracks and the two were
almost inseparable the next 19
laps, but the drama was just
beginning.
Bryan Smith (42)
and Kenny Coolbeth
(2) were pretty
much this close the
whole way.
