GOMEZ RALLIES TO RED BULL
MINAS RIDERS WIN
B
razil's brand-new hard
enduro event, the Red
Bull Minas Riders took some
of the world's best on a wild
ride through the jungles
around Belo Horizonte, April
17-20, and after four days of
extreme terrain that included
water crossings, extreme
hillclimbs, single-track
through thick jungle and
even an endurocross-style
course through the streets
of Belo Horizonte, it was
KTM's Alfredo Gomez who
stood atop the podium.
Rockstar Energy
Husqvarna's Graham Jarvis
came into the event as the
favorite, and looked as though he was headed
for victory after pulling ahead on day two. True
to form, Jarvis had started out modestly and was
gaining speed as the event wore on, but despite
his strong effort on the final day, his bid for the
victory was halted when he ran out of fuel. Jarvis
explained that he made a mistake and rode a
section of the course twice, and the extra miles
cost him the fuel to reach the finish. Fortunately
he received assistance from Austria's Lars Enockl
and was able to make it to the finish for a well-
deserved runner-up result.
"Day four was a bit unlucky for me," Jarvis said.
"I'm pleased enough to end the Minas Riders in
second overall. To be fair, Alfredo
has been riding well all week so he's
earned this win."
"It's an incredible feeling to have
won the Red Bull Minas Riders," said
Gomez. "It's the first Red Bull Hard
Enduro of the year so to come here
and win like this is fantastic. It's been
a tough week of racing, really hard,
so to win is just amazing. I'd like to
dedicate this victory to a close friend
of mine Alberto Lessmann who sadly
passed away yesterday. This victory
is for you Alberto." CN
