VOL. 53 ISSUE 9 MARCH 8, 2016 P25
Jones admitted, "I think those
guys had a little bit more pace
than me [today], but I just
stayed smooth and I capital-
ized on their mistakes.
"I'm feeling a little under the
weather, actually; I got sick
in the middle of the week so I
wasn't really expecting to last
the whole race, but it ended
up great!"
Udall said, "I only had the
lead of the race for about a
hundred yards. I came up on a
lapper and I railed the outside
really hard and it was kind of
a technical area and my front
end skipped up really high.
Once it caught, it went right
off the track and I went into the
bushes."
Though he conceded the lead
to Jones, Udall managed to get
his Michelin/Galfer/ProTaper
CRF450R back onto the trail
before Shirey passed, and even
closed on his teammate in the
final moments to secure an Ox
Motorsports Honda 1-2.
Neither of them likely would've
been in that position had Shirey
not picked a different line and
got bucked off the front of his
Pro Circuit/Torco/Troy Lee De-
signs FC 450 going up the long,
steep Yamaha uphill. "It was a
bummer; I couldn't get up fast
enough," he lamented. "I had to
come back down and get a re-
run at the hill."
Fourth overall and first
WCGP Pro II went to Trevor
Stewart, who was back on the
Stewart Family/Fasthouse/
Maxxis-backed 2011 YZ250
he'd used to win the series
finale last year. "Things didn't
really work out with the TM
thing, but there's no hard
feelings with anything," he
insisted.
Of his ride from the second
row where the Pro II field start-
ed, Stewart shared, "I ended
up getting a really good start
and worked my way up, trying to
pick people off one at a time. I
ended up getting to the Enduro-
Cross section and it looked like
a lot of people had some bad
luck [there] and I ended up capi-
talizing on their mistakes. I got
by quite a few people [there]."
Maxxis Yamaha rider Jeff
Loop enjoyed his best result to
date by claiming fifth overall,
fourth WCGP Pro, followed
by Maxxis/FMF/RPM Racing
KTM's Eric Yorba, Thompson,
Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Ka-
wasaki teammates Justin Seeds
and Robby Bell, and John Burr
Cycles/TBT Racing Kawasaki-
mounted Ryan Reina.
Mark Kariya
Though he started on the second
row, eventual WCGP Pro II winner
Trevor Stewart finished fourth
overall.
Overnight rain spelled very sloppy
conditions on Sunday, especially for
the minis who were among the first
on the shortened, re-routed course.
