JONES SURPRISES AT GLEN HELEN BIG 6
A
last-lap pass gave Ox Motor-
sports Honda's Justin Jones
his first-ever Pro-class win, but
he didn't realize it until after
the finish of the $5000 AMA
West Coast Grand Prix (WCGP)
Series feature event at the AMA
District 37/MSR Big 6 Grand
Prix Series race at Glen Helen
Raceway, March 6-7.
"I crossed the finish line
and—I don't know—I thought I
was second and everybody was
holding up number one," he
admitted.
The man he unknowingly
passed on the last lap of that
90-minute race was teammate
and defending series champ
Colton Udall, who'd crashed on
the tricky, technical, downhill
"Boy Scout" trail. Udall quickly
scrambled to get going in time
to hold onto second place for
the second round in a row, fin-
ishing just three seconds behind
Jones. Zip-Ty Racing Husqvar-
na's Dalton Shirey finished
third after leading much of that
90-minute race that served as
the highlight of the 24th Annual
Prairie Dogs Grand Prix, hosted
by the Prairie Dogs Motorcycle
Club in perfect conditions.
The early going saw Fast-
house Yamaha's Blayne Thomp-
son jump out front and set the
pace as he looked to make
it three in a row, followed by
Jones, Shirey, Yamaha-mounted
Jake Hogan (who'd DNF), Rocky
Mountain ATV/MC Kawasaki's
Robby Bell and the rest of the
field.
Thompson and Shirey began
to creep away, making the fight
for first theirs exclusively until
Thompson ran out of fuel in his
Flo Motorsports/Maxxis/TBT
Racing-backed YZ450F. "I lost
quite a bit [of time pushing my
bike back to the pit for fuel]," he
said. "I came back and we got
fifth or sixth (officially, he fin-
ished seventh overall and sixth
WCGP Pro) so we'll just come
back for the next round and
keep going forward."
