With a gate full of fresh faces for
the start of the 250SX East series,
anticipation was running high.
Malcolm Stewart was the fastest
rider all day and brimming with
confidence after winning his heat
race easily. Jeremy Martin set the
second-fastest time during qualify-
ing and had won his first Super-
cross race last year at this venue,
so he had to be considered a
threat to win, as were Justin Hill,
Tyler Bowers and a handful of oth-
ers. Despite being fourth fastest
in qualifying and winning his heat
race, Davalos' name did not seem
to be at the top of most people's
list of contenders.
It was no surprise when
Shane McElrath was out front on
his Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oil/
Red Bull KTM at the start of the
250SX Main event, but his lead
was short-lived when he inexpli-
cably rode into the Tuff Blocks
while exiting the first turn, crash-
