SUPERCROSS
MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES, AN FIM WORLD
ROUND 5 / FEBRUARY 6, 2016
UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX STADIUM / GLENDALE, ARIZONA
P48
Craig, once again, found himself
battling for the 250SX Main-
event win with Webb in Arizona,
but the end result was different
this time—he won! Craig, howev-
er, admitted afterward that Webb
was faster than him.
"Jimmy [Decotis] got the
holeshot, but I had a good line
through the whoops and made
a quick pass on the first lap and
put my head down," Craig said
of his race. "I knew I wasn't the
fastest out there, but I knew I
had good lines that could win it.
I saw the number-one coming on
lap eight; he reeled me in and
made several pass attempts and
I'm, 'here we go again.' It was
going to be a rerun, but I was
going to put in a bigger fight. I
wasn't going to let him by, and I
was going to block to the end for
this one. I felt like I put myself
into the position to win and I was
going to do it tonight.
"Fortunately for me, he fell on
lap 10 and after that I got a little
breather and rode the last five
laps out.'"
The victory was long in com-
ing for Craig who was many
years ago labeled as one of the
top up-and-coming riders in the
U.S. when he rode for the TLD
Honda Team, but injuries kept
swatting him down. He got so
frustrated that he called it quits
in 2013, but the birth of his first
child re-motivated him and he
got back into racing again mid-
way through 2015. The Phoenix
win was an emotional one for
Craig.
"Last year at this time I was
working construction," Craig
said. "To be here today, I didn't
see that happening. When I
came back last year [in the] out-
doors, I finally started to believe
in myself, then this year around
round three I knew I could win. I
just needed to get the jitters out
at the first few races.
"The last lap tonight was
amazing," Craig added. "Com-
ing over the finish line was one
of the best feelings that I've
ever had. It's unexplainable.
It's something I've dreamed of.
I envision it every day while I'm
driving to the track. I'm in bed
laying there and visualize my-
self winning and to finally put it
together and make my dream
come true is—."
