SHORT BUT SWEET
The Chris Carr-designed, Dennis
Pearson-built track inside the Orleans
Arena was possibly the shortest track
ever to host an AMA Pro Grand Na-
tional at 100 meters long on the wide
line, but that didn't mean it was too
tight for racing. The interior of the oval
was diamond shaped, which made for
very wide corners that invited widely
varying lines. Riders were often three
and four wide through the turns and
unlike on many short tracks we've
seen in the past, passing was possible
The GNC series leader coming
into the season finale, was as usual,
race tested and managed to make it
through the rough and tumble night of
indoor short track racing unscathed
and in the end, holding up the Grand
National Championship number-one
plate.
For Mees Friday night in Las Vegas
ended in elation, on the opposite
end of the spectrum was Smith, who
hoped to rekindle the short-track
magic he had early in his career, hav-
ing scored victories at the Castle Rock
and Daytona Short tracks. Smith put
in the work to get ready and looked
solid, but as he would say later, often
