SUPERPRESTIGIO OF THE AMERICAS VOL. 52 ISSUE 47 NOVEMBER 24, 2015 P63 Briefly... have a shot of catching Jared Mees and winning this year's champion- ship. He was vocal about his feelings of having such an important race on an indoor short track. "I've still got a lot to be proud of," Smith said. "I won more than anybody else, so I'm pret- ty happy about that, but I'm bummed because I wanted to be able to fight for the championship. When you come to a roller derby with 50 fast guys it's going to be a shit show and it was. That's what happens on a short track, somebody else controls your destiny and that's kind of what hap- pened to me. It sucks. I just plan on coming back next year and winning so much that I don't even have to come back to race this bullshit short track. I'll watch it from the stands." In the last GNC race of the sea- son, Sammy Halbert snuck past Kenny Coolbeth Jr. for third in the final GNC1 standings. "I'm happy to at least get a solid result out of it," Halbert said of his fourth-place finish in the finale. "But I'm definitely dis- appointed after pulling a good start and getting myself into second. Not being able to capitalize and get a po- dium spot was disappointing." Kenny Coolbeth was disappointed in his results Friday night, especially considering the hours of work he's put into preparing for this race. "I'm kind of bummed," he said. "I've been working on this for a month straight qualifying races and Coolbeth finishing ninth in the B Main, that made Mees the champion be- fore the green flag even dropped for the final. The championship battle between Mees and Smith was intense all season and at times became contentious, but Mees went on to say how bad he felt about Smith's crash earlier in the program. "Bryan's a good competitor and deep down a good friend," Mees said. "There's a rivalry there of course, because we're all going for the same thing. and frequent. With the unique track only 12 riders could ride in the main, so a B Main was devised and the top two riders from that trans- ferred to the Main, and cham- pionship points were awarded to positions 13th through 18th to those finishing third through eighth in the B Main. So Jake Mataya and Danny Eslick made it to the Main event by finishing first and second in the B Main, while Brad Baker, who was third in the B Main got 13th-place points and so on.
