FEATURE HOW TO FIND THE PROPER HELMET FIT P104 MEASURE YOUR HEAD The best thing you can do before you get to a dealer or website is to measure your head with a tape measure. Like jeans, not all sizes across different brands are the same but if you measure your head from about an inch above your eyebrows—which should be the widest part of your head— you'll be armed with the right numbers and will be able to narrow down your choice size significantly. Most good helmet manufacturers will have a siz- ing chart on their websites, so check your numbers with them. TRY THE HELMET ON Pull the helmet on and fasten it. Initial feeling is very important with a helmet. The helmet should be on the tight side of snug—not too tight that you start to feel pressure or heat buildup, but certainly not loose (and for my money, not immediately com- fortable, either). Your cheeks should have pressure on them, and there shouldn't be excessive force acting on your forehead or the back of your head. Measuring your head is the first step. Rennie doesn't have a number, it just said "fat." Try the lid on and get an immediate feel for it – those first few seconds will be a big part of your decision making.
