CHAMPIONSHIP VOL. 52 ISSUE 24 JUNE 16, 2015 P153 up and I jumped on it. Rog and I went side by side down the front straightaway and I was just in the right place for turn one. I think the second race will be a lot of the same. The person who makes the least mistakes will be in the best position." Hayden, who led portions of the race, lost by a mere .397 of a second to Hayes. It matched the best result of the season for Hayden and proved he has the speed to be a winner this season. "I went into the chicane and lost the rear and then it hooked up and I almost high-sided and lost quite a bit of time to Josh there," Hayden said. "It was pretty fun. I had a feeling when I heard him [Hayes] behind me that he was going to try to come by. When he did I tried not to make it easy on him. It was a pretty good race." Jake Lewis ran with the lead- ers for much of the first half of race one before falling back to third in the Superbike class, 5.57 seconds back from Hayes at the red flag. Still a rookie in the class, Lewis is riding a Superbike for the first time at all the tracks he visits this year and said it's taking him time to readjust to new braking points and lines required by a Super- bike over the 600 machines he previously raced. BEAUBIER RALLIES BACK Beaubier didn't let the frustra- tion of race one linger. In race two he turned in a masterful performance, battling with Hayes and Hayden for most of the race. It came down to a last-lap battle between Beau- bier and Hayes. Hayes passed going into five and held it, but Beaubier squared off the exit and shot up the inside, going up the hill exiting the turn, a very unusual place to pass. Briefly... eron Beaubier and his motorcycle af- ter Beaubier's race one crash. Hayes explained he had nowhere to go and had to get heavy on the binders and simply follow Beaubier's spinning R1 right to the edge of the track. "It swapped him over the top is what it looked like," Hayes said from his view of Beaubier's crash. "Unfortunately the bike didn't really get any momen- tum and he was right off the bike, so I couldn't turn underneath the motorcy- cle because he was there. So ended up just having to follow the thing all the way to the grass and ride around it. Roger was already in front of me so I just gathered things up." Long-time Monster Energy/Graves Yamaha team member Vittorio Bo- lognesi had to cut his race weekend short in order to fly back home to California to be with his wife Laurie, who was expecting a baby. On Satur- day night, Vitto and Laurie welcomed their third son, who they named Leonardo Vittorio Bolognesi. Rider Josh Day suffered a fall in Sun- day's Superstock 1000 race one, but he came back strong later in the day and finished fourth in race two aboard his number 00 Yamalube/ Westby Racing Yamaha R1. "We struggled most of the weekend trying to get some feeling in the front, and we were still chasing it all through the races today," Day said. "I had a weird crash in race one that ended our race early. For race two, we made the de- cision to go with the same setup that we had in race one. I got off to a good start and was running seventh over- all until around lap eight or nine. For some reason, I had a big drop in front- tire grip, and a couple of riders got by me, which unfortunately put me back continued on next page
