DAMAGE CONTROL
Although Lewis took the hole-
shot, in true Hayes fashion, he
didn't waste any time getting
into the lead in the first race of
the Superbike doubleheader.
But as is the way of it some-
times, things don't always go to
plan—in this case a high side in
the final corner early on in the
race. Fortunately for Hayes it
was early enough in the race
and the bike suffered little dam-
age so he was able to salvage
some points and finish sixth in
the Superbike class.
"It was not a lot different than
most of those moments you
have in practice and qualifying,"
Hayes said about the incident.
"The bike started swapping
ends, and I thought I had it
controlled. Fortunately, when
I went down, the bike stayed
on one side, and the damage
was minimized. I was able to
pick it up and keep going. My
first priority was to evaluate if I
could ride the bike or not. You
want to make sure you have
brakes, and figure out what you
can do and what you can't. The
bodywork damage affected
the aerodynamics a little bit,
especially with the wind, but I
was able to still run some pretty
