qualifier Tomac started midpack.
Despite tweaking his back when
he overjumped the finish-line jump
in the first practice of the day,
33-year-old Reed was racey, and
he was doing everything he could
to both fend off Dungey and get
by Barcia for the race lead, but on
lap two, Reed went down in one of
the technical rhythm sections and
remounted 21st. He would eventu-
ally recover for eighth.
Out front, Dungey went to work
on Barcia, making the pass on lap
four, with Barcia's teammate Peick
snatching second place away a lap
later.
By this point, Tomac sat fourth
and immediately went to work
on the JGR/Toyota Yamaha duo,
dispatching of Barcia on lap seven,
and then Peick on lap 11 to take
over second place.
At this point, the top three was
set, although Rockstar Energy
Husqvarna's Jason Anderson and
Honda's Cole Seely—coming off
his first career win last weekend
in Houston—eventually found their
way into fourth and fifth, respec-
tively.
For Peick, after spending time
as a podium threat as early as
round two in Phoenix before injur-
ing his foot and ankle, it marked
the first time he's ever finished on
the podium.
