"I don't have a good answer for you," Hayes replied when asked what hap- pened. "It was a very slow crash. We got off the line okay. Rog [Hayden] attacked just up turn one pretty good. I thought I got through the esses okay. I made a good run in there. I'd done my braking, let off the brake lever and just kind of tipped it in. It was right at the turn in, I was starting up the hill a little bit, felt a little bump in the front and the next thing I knew I was sliding on my head. It's typical of the wet, there's not much room for error, you have one little slip and all of a sudden you're sliding along." The left handlebar was broken off in the crash so Hayes' day was done. Now behind by 30 points, Hayes turned it into a positive. "It probably puts a little more pressure on him than it does on me," he said somewhat surpris- ingly of his teammate. "What do I have to lose? If I want to win [the championship] I have one op- tion. We're going to some tracks that I like and I think having both races on the same day plays into my favor a little bit because I've been working really hard." For Hayden Road Atlanta was a nightmare. He led then crashed while being challenged for the lead by Beaubier in race one and then pulled out a massive lead in race two before crashing. "In the first race when Beau- bier passed me it put me off line and I hit a sealer patch and crashed," Hayden explained. "In the second race I saw the board, knew I had a big gap and didn't even feel like I was riding that hard. We looked at the data and you know, it was the same brake pressure same speed, same everything. I was just off the line a couple of inches com- pared to previous laps. "I don't know, it's a pretty low point for me. It seems like I can't catch a break right now. That second race I couldn't believe I was pulling away because I was just trying to get my confidence back from the first race. It's hard to find a positive from this weekend, but if there is one we were fast in the wet, fast in the dry, fast in the half and half. I just want to put this weekend behind us and move on to Virginia. I just want to apologize to my team and my crew. They deserve a lot better than that. I know I can run with these guys, we've just got to put it together for the whole (Above) Superbike newbies Beaubier (left) and Lewis (right) congratulated each other on a job well done in the tough conditions.
