before the white flag aboard his
Motorex/Dunlop/Fox Racing-
backed 450 XC-F. "I got a
bad start, which I was kind of
surprised about," he admitted.
"I came from probably outside
the top 10 to first on the first
lap. I went really aggressive; I
wanted to see where my speed
was at."
But after moving into first,
"My arms blew up—arm pump
really bad! I went off the track
once, came back on, Robby
got behind me and I ended up
wadding, got back up, wrecked
again, and I was like, 'All right,
start breathing! Calm down!' It's
the first race and I've got a great
bike, it was just me. I pumped
up and made some mistakes.
"Once I started breathing
and got my flow back after the
halfway mark, it was good. I
started picking good lines and
reeled those guys in, passed
them and it was a nice win."
Sportsmen
The WCGP is but one part
of the weekend's racing,
of course, and most of the
1600-plus entries make up the
various sportsman classes.
GPs tend to bring out the
not-so-serious as well as the
dedicated amateurs, and
Adelanto had no shortage of
either.
For instance, AMA Hare &
Hound National Champ Ricky
Brabec entered Revolution
Expert aboard a clean old
KX500 since he still hadn't
finalized sponsors, he donned
oversized overalls, covered old
logos with white tape and went
racing, entered as Bobby Dick.
To no one's surprise, he
overalled that race, coming
from row two in short order to
easily best the more than 120
riders entered in various divisions
of the Women, Mini, Legends,
Masters and Vintage classes.
Collin Elliott was the top Mini
Expert in that race, finishing fifth
(Below) It's not often that non-
Supercross racers get to ride
inside a baseball stadium, but
that's what the Mavericks Adelanto
GP offered to Big 6 competitors.
