Udall was third off the line aboard the
Nicoll Racing/Pro Circuit/MSR-spon-
sored CRF450X. Since he planned to
ride the first 625 miles or so straight
through, most observers figured he'd
ride fairly conservatively and simply tail
Bell, but Udall sprinted right away, blew
by Bell and started to pull away! It was
not the pace of someone who'd prob-
ably be on the bike for 12 hours.
He didn't even forfeit the lead when
he crashed hard, bending the bike and
hurting his shoulder. "I managed to ride
