night stalker Hengeveld chased
down Samuels in the pre-dawn
hours of Friday to snatch the win
and, therefore, the champion-

has won either since 1996.
Brabec had the first start at

Briefly...
The last time a Kawasaki won the
1000 was 1996, which was the
last year of the Kawasaki Team
Green era. The winning team
that year consisted of Ty Davis,
Ted Hunnicutt and Paul Krause
aboard a KX500.
Since '96, Hondas dominated
the 1000, racking up 17 consecu-
tive victories and 24 overall, mak-
ing Big Red the winningest mo-
torcycle manufacturer in SCORE
history.
Though it was the first Baja 1000
triumph for Ricky Brabec and
Max Eddy, Jr., their teammates
Robby Bell (third win) and Steve
Hengeveld (eighth overall win,
11th class win) have multiple victo-
ries on their résumés.

(Left) Robby Bell sails over
Highway 3 just outside of Ojos
Negros early in the race while
holding second. He and his THR
Kawasaki teammates wouldn't
take the lead for good until more
than 1000 miles later.
(Below) Colton Udall earned
massive respect with his super-
human ride. He only rode once—
but it was about half the race, from
the start to well over 600 miles—
and led almost the entire section.
