last moto—I fell in the first turn,
but I came back from dead last
to, I think, eighth so I couldn't be
happier. [Officially, he finished
seventh out of 32 in the E2 final
moto.] I've got a gold medal and
I'm stoked.
"I got real emotional [on the
podium during the playing of our
national anthem] because this is
the greatest accomplishment of
my career."
Women's World Trophy
This one belonged entirely to de-
fending champs Australia. On the
American team, Gutish demon-
strated good speed early in the
week and came close to winning a
test. However, day three was as far
as she or Baldwin would get, leav-
ing Mastin to carry the flag alone.
"This one was definitely one
to remember, just because of
the amount of people it took out
with bike problems so I guess I'm
just fortunate enough to have got
through day three," she said. "I
was unprepared—I mean I didn't
have any filters out at the checks.
I had a dust cover on my bike and
last year I pulled the cover half-
way through the day and I figured
here that would be good. I pulled
the dust cover halfway through,
between checks five and six.
Close to six, my bike started run-
ning like crap and I got to that
check and I was like, 'Anybody
got a filter?' and they said, 'no.'
"So I'm like, 'Well, I guess I'm
going to have to ride on.' "
She lost 26 minutes in the fol-
lowing test where her bike would
barely run until someone found a
spare filter somewhere and ran
it out to her, but the new filter
brought her 250 XC back to life
and she kept going to finish on
bronze.
Clubs
Much like Women's World Tro-
phy, the six U.S. teams in the
Club category saw their fortunes
plummet, but there were bright
spots.
They started extremely strong
with the Wellard trio of Chris
Bach, Andrew Delong and Gary
Sutherlin leading an unprec-
edented American sweep of the
top four spots out of 77 teams
entered. Beta USA (Nick Burson,
Cory Buttrick, Justin Sode), Go
Fasters (Travis Coy, Alex Dorsey,
Josh Knight) and Missouri Mud-
ders (Alexander Lehr, Kyle Mc-
Donal, Cody Schafer) filled sec-
ond to fourth. Elizabeth Scott's
three Seniors (Jeff Fredette, Paul
Krause, Brian Storrie) sat 11
th
,
while Tony Agonis (Benjamin Kel-
ley, John Kelley, Mike Pillar) lost
Pillar on the first day with an ig-
nition failure, putting them in the
hole right away and in 55th.
Individually, eight of the first 10
in C2 were Americans with Bach
leading the way over teammates
Sutherlin and Delong.
Day two was more of the same
except the Elizabeth Scott team
jumped to eighth.
Then the wheels fell off.
Day three claimed Bach so even
though Sutherlin would go on to
finish 1-2 in C2, the team plummet-
fused to use that as an excuse.
Frenchman Loic Larrieu was the
only Junior World Trophy rider
to better his score at the end of
the week, finishing fifth in E2
less than three minutes ahead of
Jones who was seventh E2.
"I felt really comfortable down
here," Jones said. "I took a lot of
advice from a lot of people that
were down here, and my dad's
very wise also. I felt comfortable
and confident coming in here
so I expected nothing less, I re-
ally didn't. I'm so happy with how
the week went except for the
