MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 17/OCTOBER 26, 2014
SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT/SEPANG MALAYSIA
P58
race, with Aoyama 11th. NGM
Forward Yamaha's Alex de An-
gelis had been with Redding, but
retired on the last lap. Karel Abra-
ham had crashed out earlier.
Hayden's crash took him by
surprise, after he had closed up
on Aoyama.
"When I let off the brakes for
turn nine, the front folded and I
couldn't save it," Hayden said.
"No excuses – it was my mistake.
I felt good on the bike today, so
that was a shame. I think we
could have had at least a top-10
finish."
The high rate of attrition left
points for the usual back mark-
ers, with PBM ART's Michael La-
verty only two seconds off Aoya-
ma, Mike di Meglio on the Avintia
Kawasaki another 10 down, and
14th-placed Broc Parkes – still
suffering the after-effects of his
heavy Phillip Island tumble –
more than 15 seconds adrift.
Marquez now has 337 points,
and even a win at Valencia won't
see him equal Lorenzo's 2010
record of 383. More importantly,
Rossi's hopes of second were
boosted with 275 points to Lo-
renzo's 263. Pedrosa's fourth
place is set, 230 points; like-
wise Dovizioso's fifth on 174. But
there's a good battle for sixth,
between Pol and Aleix Espargaro
(126 and 117), sandwiching Smith
on 119.
Honda secured the Construc-
tors' title, though Yamaha gained
valuable ground in the Teams'
title, where both riders' points
are totaled. With Pedrosa's no-
score, Movistar Yamaha is now
29 points adrift. And in spite of
a non-finish, Aleix Espargaro is
now unassailable as Open cat-
egory champion. CN
