ing to be the key tonight with the
track being so slick, but honestly
I rode 18 perfect laps and tonight
definitely worked out in my favor."
"Perfect" might be a bit of an
overstatement, since Webb had
a few snags in his race, one of
which was a misunderstanding
among the announcer and track
workers (see sidebar). Webb
also had a crash in the rocks,
which could have led to a replay
of the Atlanta race where he lost
a near 20-second lead.

bunch of lappers in the rock turn,"

Briefly...
As Cody Webb prepared to spray
the champagne on the podium, Alan
Stillwell of Stillwell Performance
peeled back the front number-plate
graphic from Webb's 300 RR, re-
vealing his red backgrounds. "I
never took them off," Stillwell said.
As evidenced by Cody Webb's
untouchable lap times (the only
rider to break 32-seconds in the
main), many presumed a two-stroke
was the bike to have in the slippery
conditions. Webb didn't necessarily
agree, and didn't attribute his supe-
rior lap times to the two-stroke. "I'm
still going back and forth between
two-stroke and four-stroke," Webb
said." There's a couple turns out
there tonight where the four-stroke
was definitely an advantage; maybe
the finish line jump. On that short run
you need good strong torque right
off the bat. On that rock turn and a
couple other things, I was carrying a
little more speed on the two-stroke;
you can kind of charge harder. But
basically I think I just hit all my marks
consistently, perfect and had throttle
control. Some of the other guys got
a little wild on the bike and it takes
them out of contention for the race.
I was pretty much mistake-free, so
the two-stroke played in my favor to-
night."
The track itself appeared relatively
fast and easy—that was until the
water was added and the Salt Lake
City dirt turned into grease. Although
the obstacles themselves weren't
that technical, the slick conditions
made the course difficult to navigate,
particularly in the flat turns. Though
technical, most also agreed that the
