INTERVIEW
TREY CANARD
P76
of the hope of winning. Fear vs.
Hope. Negative vs. Positive.
"I'd say over the years it's
changed," Canard said. "In the
beginning, it was more of, 'I don't
want to lose.' I enjoy winning. I
think anyone enjoys winning. The
joy of excelling at what they do.
And when you're winning, you're
excelling at what you do. For me,
it's more of a drive to win. I try to
be genuinely happy for others
when they win because I know
that feeling and how hard they
have to work at it. And I know ev-
erything that has to go right on
any given day to win a race. So,
I try not to let that affect me, and
I try not to worry about beating
anyone specifically, and instead
just enjoy the process of winning.
That's what I shoot for."
Even Bob Hannah said that
when someone passed him on
the track, he looked at it as if they
were literally stealing from him.
They were taking money out of
his pocket, and just like if some-
one did that on the street, it moti-
vated him to fight back. That's not
Canard.
"It's one thing for me that I just
enjoy my passion," Canard said.
"That worked for those guys, and
they're all great champions, but
for me, I don't look at it that way.
I try to enjoy it, and I try to win,
and some days I'm not going to,
and I've got to be okay with that.
Some days, I am going to. I just
try to enjoy it and do it from more
of a passion and love for it. I love
everything involved in the pro-
cess of winning. For me, it's not
so much, 'I just don't want some-
one else to have that.'"
That's motivation through jeal-
ousy or spitefulness, which are
both negative emotions.
"And maybe that might not be
the biggest advantage," Canard
said. "But I feel like my passion
will drive me a lot farther, or the
end result will be much better,
if I'm focused on what I'd like
to achieve and why I'd like to
achieve it, rather than just not
seeing someone else achieve it."
This is a much healthier out-
look. There's something to be
Canard's first
outdoor overall
victory of his
career came—and
none too soon—
at the final round
in Utah.
