MOTOGP WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 14/SEPTEMBER 28, 2014
MOTORLAND ARAGON/ALCANIZ, SPAIN
P66
The consequences, however,
were both very unexpected, and
vastly entertaining, for a damp-
ened race-day crowd of more
than 66,500.
Movistar's Jorge Lorenzo
claimed his and Yamaha's first
win of the season – a tactical tri-
umph that belied the element of
gambling.
Aleix Espargaro was second,
the first time an Open category
bike had made the rostrum –
though his NGM Forward Yama-
ha is all but a factory bike anyway.
And the so-far badly belea-
guered Cal Crutchlow was not
just the first Ducati, but also
claimed his first rostrum with an
ultra-close third, by just two hun-
dredths. He'd caught Espargaro
out of the last corner, and the
pair bashed each other all the
way down the home straight, with
Crutchlow asserting afterwards:
"I couldn't change gear because
my leg was touching his bike. I
crossed the line in third instead
of fifth."
The 23-lapper had started with
rain spitting fitfully, and by the
time it was two-thirds done the
white flags were out to permit
bike-changes and it was getting
properly wet in several areas.
Those who decided to change
bikes early made the right
choice... Espargaro was the first
one in.
A few corners into the
Grand Prix of Aragon and
it was Andrea Iannone
(29) leading the way
over Dani Pedrosa (26),
Marquez (93), Lorenzo
(hidden) and the rest of
the field.
