MOTOCROSS LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 11/AUGUST 16, 2014 IRONMAN RACEWAY/CRAWFORDSVILLE, INDIANA P58 to earn him the overall victory. Behind Roczen it was two more KTMs with Sipes, proving a very strong mud rider, taking third. He'll be back to the same grounds later this year to race the Ironman GNCC event. It marked the first podium finish in a moto all season for the Kentuckian. Andrew Short improved to fourth in the second moto. That was his best moto finish of the year. Josh Grant also rallied from a 12th-place finish in moto one to round out the top five in the sec- ond moto. Maintenance done to the track between the first and second motos did not agree with Dungey. He complained of a serious lack of traction and was only able to manage ninth. While that finish was good enough to get him third overall on the day, the real dam- age came in the point standings, where he dropped 13 points to Roczen on the weekend. >>250 NATIONAL Musquin's Happy-Mess, Martin The Titlist With the treacherous track facing them, riders in the 250 class suffered much the same fate as their 450 brethren with poor vision, lack of grip, getting stuck, crashing and mechanicals all served up for the quarter-liter machines. Starts were so critical, be- cause if you were anywhere but the front, you were going to be splattered with the sticky mud and not able to see well. Jessy Nelson nailed the holeshot in the first moto on his Troy Lee Designs /Lucas Oil Honda over Martin and Zach Bell. That was all Nelson needed to propel him to his first career moto victory. Nelson kept his mistakes to a minimum and held off charges by series leader Jeremy Martin to win the moto by 7.809 seconds. "That was my first good start since Colorado and I got a sec- ond there," Nelson said. "That's huge in this class because ev- erybody's fast, everybody's so close. My first moto win was the first for my team. It was great for the team and great for myself." Martin fell back early and trailed Nelson by over five sec- onds on the first lap, but then he charged. A cheer rose from the crowd on lap four when Mar- tin closed to within a second or so of the leader. It looked like it might be a battle to the finish, but Martin made a few more errors and eventually lost ground. For- tunately for Martin there was no real pressure from behind as he was about seven seconds ahead of Musquin. Another plus for Martin was the struggles of Blake Baggett in the moto. He, and to a lesser extent Cooper Webb, were the only riders with any real shot at catching Martin in the champion- ship chase. It was slim at best for both, but when Martin fin- ished ahead of both of them he clinched the championship. "I couldn't believe it when I pulled up to the podium after the first moto," Martin said. "I was like, 'OK, a solid second-place finish let's get ready to go again in the second moto,' and I saw all these signs being held up congratulat- ing me for the championship." About 18 seconds behind Musquin came Rockstar Energy Joey Savatgy (43) was in the thick of things all day. He finished it out on the 250 podium.
