The battle for second in the
closing laps came down to Smith
and Mees. Mees stuffed it up in-
side Smith going into one for the
final time, but Smith was able to
draft back ahead of Mees down
the back straight and the power
of his Kawasaki kept him in front
to the flag, although the margin
between the two was a scant
.006 of a second.
BEST OF THE REST
Johnson and Baker both com-
plained of tire wear and fell off
the battle for the runner-up spot
late. With about three laps to go
Baker slid his factory No. 1 Har-
ley off the groove coming into
three and that gave Johnson the
opportunity he needed to slip
underneath and hold off Baker
for fourth. The pair ran about six
seconds behind Coolbeth at the
end.
Henry Wiles came home a
lonely sixth on his Dons Kawa-
saki/DPC Racing Kawasaki. He
ran as far back as eighth in the
early going before making his
way past Stevie Bonsey and then

race resumed after a nine-year hia-
tus.
Jake Johnson had his van broken
into the morning of the race and had
a bunch of personal items of his, his
wife's and a friend's stolen. By the
time the police came and took their
report Johnson barely made it to the
track on time to race. "We were only
out of the van 10 or 15 minutes tops,"
Johnson said. "We went in ordered
our food and came out and there
it was. I think they knew what they
were doing. There was tons of traf-
fic and it was in a good part of town.
It definitely didn't put me in the best
frame of mind to race."
Marc Marquez was a big hit at the
Indy Mile. Here he signs a Honda
RS750 that was outfitted as a tribute
to the MotoGP World Champion.
