n intense Mid-Ohio dou-
bleheader proved to be
the most memorable
showdown yet in the developing
struggle for AMA Superbike su-
periority being waged by one of
the series' most decorated icons
and its most promising newcom-
er to come along in some time.
The scheduled two-day event
in Lexington, Ohio, was effec-
tively transformed into a one-day
affair as recurring rain showers
kept the bikes off the track on
Saturday except for a handful of
limited untimed sessions.
This was thought to play direct-
ly into the hands of 39-year-old
Josh Hayes. The Monster Energy
Graves Yamaha ace is a master
at both getting up to speed im-
mediately and executing in tricky
conditions -- a fact that has al-
lowed him to assemble a near-
