VOL. 51 ISSUE 27 JULY 8, 2014 P23 Briefly... The Goodin Fund The family of motorcycle rider Bobby Goodin and the Board of Directors of the Pikes Peak Inter- national Hill Climb have come together to honor the memory of Goodin, who was killed during the race on Sunday, June 29, after crossing the finish line and finishing fourth at the Summit of Pikes Peak. The Goodin family was insistent that monies from the fund be primar- ily used for the sole pur- pose of increasing safety on the 12.42-mile course. Donations to the Bobby Goodin Pikes Peak Mo- torcycle Safety Fund will be "directed to enhance the on-going efforts to create greater course safety for all motorcycle competitors and compli- ment the aggressive ef- forts by the organizers of the world's most difficult hill climb and the na- tion's second-oldest mo- tor sports race to ensure that all competitors know that their safety is the top priority of the race." The PPIHC has established this fund to help ensure the financial security of his two daughters, Jac- quelyn, 26, and Melissa, 23. James Kerker Passes James Kerker, who was a series regular in the AMA Superbike Cham- pionship from the mid- to-late 2000s, died in a plane crash, along with his wife and son, at Love- land Ski Area in Colorado on Tuesday, July 2. Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office captain Randy Long confirmed to area media that the Kerker family left Rocky Moun- tain Airport in Broomfield at 8:10 a.m., and then crashed a short time later at Loveland Ski Area's Loveland Valley. Sher- riff Long also said James Kerker, 43, was the pilot. His wife, Amy Kerker, 39 and their six-year-old son, Lucas, were also on board. None survived. Kerker, who was from Marysville, Ohio, was a privateer racer in AMA Superbike who raced Hondas. According to friend Ken Welty, Kerker worked for Honda R&D in Marysville, Ohio, and previous to racing AMA Superbikes, he raced in WERA National Endur- ance road races. Charles Everitt Passes Former motojournalist Charles Everitt passed on Friday, July 4 from an apparent heart attack, ac- cording to friends of the former Cycle Guide staff- er and author of "How To Repair Your Motorcycle." PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAY ARCHER/KTM IMAGES both fast, we were good enough to win. But so many things happen in a long race like Suzuka and it didn't quite happen. Now it is good to be back together again after 28 years. "I always think, whenever I race, my aim is to win. After practice and testing I'll have a better idea about the race. You always know there will be changing conditions during the race, which is why we will be keeping an open-mind. But we are still hoping for the best and aiming for the win. The preparations that I've made for this race are the same as last year - motocross and mountain bike riding. Last year I did three or four 600 races in Texas, but for this year I did an AMA Superbike test in Austin. "Fitness is the most important thing to maintain a good pace in a long race. You need to ride more consistently from start to finish and maintain op- timum strength and stamina. Although diet is im- portant, I do now tend to eat what I want to, when I want to." GOOD-SHOOT.COM/AKI KUSUDO Kevin Schwantz is readying himself for the upcoming Suzuka 8 Hour.
