AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP VOL. 51 ISSUE 25 JUNE 24, 2014 P45 complete series turnaround for Hayes is the fact that privateer David Anthony, known by fans as "Aussie Dave," finds himself second in the standings. Antho- ny had a remarkable weekend at Barber, finishing second in Saturday's race (a career best) and following that up with a solid fourth in Sunday's race, which included him battling for position with Beaubier. Hayes and Anthony were helped to their position in the series by nightmare outings for both Beaubier and Yoshimura Suzuki's Roger Hayden, the two riders who shared the series lead coming into the weekend. The sure-footed Beaubier crashed twice on Saturday – once in qualifying and then again in Saturday's attrition-filled race. He managed to come back and finish third on Sunday, but you could tell his confidence was shaken. He said he had se- rious issues with front-end chat- ter on his Yamaha R1 Superbike all weekend, saying that he and the team had to figure out some- thing before the next race in less than a month's time at Laguna Seca. Hayden also had a weekend Briefly... all-time to Mat Mladin's 63. Hayes joined Roger Hayden and Cameron Beaubier as AMA Pro Superbike pole winners in 2014. Hayes' pole- winning time of 1:25.063 was well off the 2008 track record set by Mladin at 1:23.664. Hayes blamed the heat for making the track slippery and for bunched up traffic keeping him from having a clear track. Josh Hayes' two wins at Barber marked his sixth straight Barber Su- perbike victory. That matches the re- cord of six straight won at the track by Mat Mladin in the period from 2007 to 2009, where the Aussie swept every race at the Alabama cir- tally different bike. I had good speed. I feel bad for my guys mainly. They worked until 1:30 last night and I was going to go for it today to show them my thanks, but there was nothing I could do. I had no grip right away and I knew something was up. At the end I just tried to finish." 4 JOSH HAYES 1ST/1ST Josh Hayes leaves Barber not only firmly in control of the championship, but seemingly filled back with confidence after spending a lot of time previous to this weekend chas- ing his younger teammate. Hayes says this event has rein- vigorated his competitive juices, and now believes Camer- on Beaubier will face a new challenge, trying to come from behind. "I don't know how the points layout," Hayes said. "but if I have a race worth of points that means if Cameron wins the rest of the season and I can finish second to him and could possibly still bring home the championship. That takes it out of his hands a little bit and puts a lot of pressure on him. There's still a lot of pressure on me to perform, but I feel like I can perform and be competitive in every race. So we've got to be smart and keep doing what I've practiced doing for so many years and see where we end up at New Jersey." 2 CAMERON BEAUBIER 15TH/3RD Cameron Beaubier's weekend at Barber Motorsports Park couldn't have gone much worse. He dropped from first to fourth in the standings after suffering a crash on Saturday and then battling with confidence in his Yamaha's front end on Sunday. Still Beaubier was encouraged that he was at least able to rally for a podium on Sunday in spite of his lack of feel for the bike. "It feels great," Beaubier said of ending up third on Sunday. "I felt really bad for my team yester- day crashing two bikes within eight laps or so on track. I've definitely got to give it up to those guys for getting back on track. To tell you the truth I'm pretty happy with third right now after the rough day I had yesterday and a run of mistakes I had today. I'm going to go back and try to figure out what we can do to move forward. It was a good race for Josh and Martin. They rode awesome. We move on to Laguna." 25 DAVID ANTHONY 2ND/4TH Privateer David Anthony continues to amaze with his solid performances. The Australian rider suddenly finds himself second in the series standings at a superlative outing at Barber where he scored his career best of second on Sat- urday and followed that up with a fourth Sunday on his ADR Motorsports Suzuki. "It was nice to be able to run the pace with him [Beaubier in Sunday's race]," Anthony said. "I lost him a bit there at the end, but for most of the race I was able to stick with his pace. It's great to be up there and now I've finally convinced myself that I can do it every week. Sunday's race was more satisfying to me than Saturday. Saturday's race was a gift, you know you had to be there to get it, but today was a lot better. I ran the pace and was right there with him and only dropped off there at the end." Roger Hayden (95) kept Hayes (4) honest on Saturday, but the Yoshimura Suzuki rider crashed out close to the end of the race. continued on next page
