SUPERBIKE AMA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS 5-6/JUNE 21-22, 2014 BARBER MOTORSPORTS PARK/LEEDS, ALABAMA P44 My Own Race: 18 CHRIS ULRICH 14TH/7TH Chris Ulrich crashed out of Saturday's race and badly gashed his left elbow. He was bleeding so badly the red flag was thrown to bring him medical attention. He rallied on Sunday to finish seventh, his best result of the season. This in spite of being hit with a 10-second penalty for jump- ing the start. Ulrich said Sunday's penalty actually freed him to race with abandon to try to make up for the lost pen- alty time. "Once I saw I had the 10-second penalty I figured I'd have a go at Chris [Clark]. If I could have made it stick and pulled away, no problem, but I couldn't. I knew [Larry] Pegram was right behind me and I knew he had a jump start too because I was reading the board. I was watching Clark's board and it was plus four, plus six, plus eight and then when it was plus 10 I looked up and I was in seventh, but I wasn't going to hold 10 seconds against Clark. It's a positive day for me though. Two races in a row I've crashed out of finishing positions, but the big thing is the bike is im- proving week in, week out. I'm getting faster and can ride it hard and that's really good for the morale of the team." 36 MARTIN CARDENAS 16TH/2ND The Yoshimura Suzuki rider had an up and down week- end at Barber. He suffered a big crash on Saturday on the first lap, which destroyed his race bike. He came back strong Sunday to take second, his best result of 2014 so far. He held off a last lap charge by Cameron Beaubier in Sunday's final. "I don't know what happened," Cardenas said of Satruday's massive get off. "I lost the front tire go- ing into that corner, suddenly and it happened very fast. I don't know if I touched maybe sealer or something. I don't know. Just three fingers [on his left hand] are a little bit sore, but they're okay. I was thinking about it [Saturday's crash] quite a bit [in Sunday's race]. To crash once is quite enough. The bike was destroyed yesterday, so I didn't want to crash today. Today the bike was good. Rear grip was not perfect, but we did what we could. I knew Roger [Hayden] was there, but he wasn't attacking or anything. I was just preparing for the last four laps because I knew he was go- ing to try something, but then I knew Cameron [Beaubier] was coming and I lowered my head and got into the 26s again and that was it." 95 ROGER HAYDEN 13TH/5TH It was a bitter weekend for Roger Hayden, who shared the point's lead with Cameron Beaubier coming into the event. He likes Barber and he'd trained hard and was ready for the heat, but a mistake in Saturday's race ended in a crash while he was running a close second to Josh Hayes and then he had the tough fortune to get a bad rear tire in Sun- day's race. He ran third early, but dropped in the closing laps as the tire deteriorated. "I just got a bad tire from Dun- lop," Hayden explained. "It was no good the whole race and finally it just blistered up and came all the way apart. The cords were hanging out. It's disappointing; I had a to-
