PARTS UNLIMITED OFF-ROAD MOTORCYCLE AND ATV NATIONALS VOL. 51 ISSUE 24 JUNE 17, 2014 P109 some of the course, with some of the downed logs and stuff I couldn't see. "It was good to get back in the groove — single-track, tight woods — and see how the ol' Honda '450R did. Second place: It did pretty good. I wish I could've got a win today for the JCR Hon- da team, but it wasn't in the cards so maybe I'll have to come back for redemption." Despite three consecutive tri- umphs, Whibley downplayed any talk of a perfect season: "That'd be nice again, but we'll just see how it goes. There're plenty of guys in here that can take a win off me with Jason and Nick rid- ing really good, Chris Bach com- ing today. We'll see how it goes. Briefly... an adult-oriented week, the city has requested no races for the kids. In- stead, Friday will be a demo day with a number of companies showcasing their products in hands-on trials. The format for Sunday's race will be two "motos" of an hour and 15 minutes, separated by a one-hour break. The $10,000 Pro purse will award $5000 to the winner. Pro 2 racer Derek Spangler cut his race short when he stopped to help one rider who'd crashed hard after apparently hitting a hidden stump in the leaves. "I thought he was dead!" Spangler said, describing the badly mangled bike and moaning rider. But the crashed racer eventually got up, just in time for another rider to crash in front of Spangler who spent more time making sure he was okay. Af- ter that, Spangler said, he'd lost so much time he just called it a day and helped pit for Jimmy Jarrett, though officials offered to let Spangler race the next round for free. 412 MARK HERESCO PRO 2 1 ST PLACE, 7 TH O/A SRT/Fasst Company/Fly Racing KTM 250 XC-mounted Mark Heresco said, "It was a beautiful day, beautiful dirt, the bike ran great. All the sponsors' products held up to- day. Can't ask for much better. Today, it wasn't too, too hard, but I wouldn't say it's getting easier [to win Pro 2]. I would say my speed is coming about and things are start- ing to click for me. I'm hoping to keep improving and maybe catch up to these Pro 1 guys." 99 CODYBARNES ADVANCED B 1 ST PLACE, 18TH O/A Teenager Cody Barnes won the award for most time spent racing on Sunday aboard his G2 Ergo/FMF/Peterson Chiro- practic/Fly Racing machines. He started out by winning the combined 65/110cc race on his KX100, finishing that one in 42 minutes and 30 seconds (a minute and 13 seconds ahead of runner-up Tommy Fortune, Jr.). He then took his YZ125 to the line for the next race (B classes, Women and older gents) as a Lite B and overalled that one as well, beating everyone with his 1:23:07, 2:01 ahead of Lite B and overall runner-up Jarrett Ruchotzke. Since he was on a roll, he and his parents decided to at least run a lap in the afternoon race where he'd enter B Advanced. But after getting into the lead, he couldn't help but keep on going and he won there. Still, he completed eight laps in 2:25:40, runner-up Ronnie Beach finishing sev- en laps in 2:12:22. Unofficially, the youngster from Sterling, Illinois, raced a total of 4:31:27 and won all three classes he entered, prompting him to admit, "It was kind of a last-minute decision. I guess it's all for [helping increase my] endurance. The second race, it was a little tiring--an hour and 20 minutes- -but really, the third race was what was hardest on me! I really just wanted to go out and play, then once I led a couple laps [in B Advanced] I decided, well, since I'm leading I'd better try and win it, and we ended up winning it!" (Far left) Seeing others take shortcuts incensed Jason Thomas, but he channeled that frustration into a strong third-place showing. (Left) Nick Fahringer struggled with bike setup but still finished fourth.
