The second time around,
Whibley worked back to the
front of the pack and managed
to avoid those time-consuming
spills, controlling the pace for the
remainder of the event. "Once I
got in the lead [again], I caught
my breath for a lap and sort of
learned the track a little bit and
started pushing after that."
As usual, much of the passing
took place behind him with Bach,
Fahringer, Jarrett and Thomas
doing most of the scrapping.
Thomas said, "I got a good
start and was out there and we
were riding together, then Paul
got away, Chris got around me.
I went down and caught back
up to him, then crashed again. I
broke my rib last week so the bot-
tom of my back started to lock up
so I just rode in and got a solid
third. It should be good for sec-
ond in points, still."
On the other hand, Bach said,
"I had a pretty crap start, but
once we got in the woods, ev-
eryone was going everywhere.
I was actually leading the major-
ity of the first lap, but it's such a
terrible place at these things to
be leading early like that. You're
pretty much just a sitting duck —
you're going where you think you
should go but don't know what
the guys behind you are doing.
