LUCAS OIL AMA PRO MOTOCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP
VOL. 51 ISSUE 23 JUNE 10, 2014 P73
away with a wire-to-wire victory —
his first win of the season.
"That first moto was definitely
a step in the right direction," said
Stewart. "I got a good start and
got out front. I made a few mis-
takes early, but I was able to hold
onto it."
According to the team, setup
has been an issue all year, and
they decided to make some ad-
justments between motos to
take care of a problem Stewart
was having in the first moto,
however, according to Stewart,
fixing one problem created a
couple more, and things were
worse for moto two.
"There were some things we
kind of struggled with in the
first moto and we fixed that, but
then we created more issues,"
said Stewart. "I made a few mis-
takes early on, so I would gain
on those guys and then I would
make a mistake. You have to
push to make time on these
guys and sometimes it works
and sometimes it doesn't."
Stewart's win proved that the
KTM team can be beaten, and it
seemed to spark a change in at-
titude around the pits, and in the
Suzuki camp.
"From where we were at Glen
Helen to where we are now, we
are starting to make progress
and we are getting back into this
thing," said Stewart. "I think the
wins are pretty close. With the
data we got today, we know we
are pretty close on setup and
we're feeling good I can win."
In moto two, Stewart didn't
get the jump he got in the first
moto, and he was fifth out of
the first turn behind Canard,
Dungey, Grant, and Roczen.
Despite the problems he experi-
enced due to the setup change
between motos, Stewart was
only able to work his way up to
third by the end of the moto, be-
hind the KTM duo, but that was
still good enough for second

week off and recovered a bit and sur-
prisingly I feel pretty good."

Kawasaki's Chad Reed suffered a
slight setback in his comeback from
injury. Reed suffered a big crash in
the first practice session and took
blows to his ribs and head. After the
crash he said he was coughing up
blood and had a major headache.
Still, the Australian toughed it out
and rode to 13-10 moto finishes for
11
th
overall.
Toyota/N-Fab/JGRMX/Yamaha's
Josh Grant was lucky to race at
Colorado, let alone finish fifth over-
all. The week leading up to the race,
Grant spent most of the week on the
couch recovering from strep throat.
He saved some of his energy by not
riding the second practice/qualifying
session.
After the race, the topic of the new
drug-testing rule came up and Ryan
Dungey said that he thinks it's good
to have the racers tested. "Based off
the blood test we did last night and
the pee test we did after the race,
I would much rather do the blood
test, because it's a lot quicker," said
Dungey. "But that's where the real
stuff is going to show up too, so I
think both of them are good for the
sport. I don't think our sport is too
dirty, but I think it's really good that
the series is stepping up and do-
ing the testing. Sadly, I guess some
guys do that stuff, but at the same
time, it's getting so intense and so
physical. It's not like 20 minutes and
then cruise the last 15, it's all out for
35 minutes; it's high intensity and
you have to train and be ready for it."
