and then when [Jorge] Lorenzo
passed me he put on the brakes
more than I expected and I had to
go wide."
Very wide, dropping behind
several other riders.
"After that I had some great
overtakes to get to second," he
continued. "I enjoyed that quite a
lot, but I was only looking at Val-
entino [Rossi] – I didn't see my
pit board, but at some corners I
could see him, and every lap he
was a little bit closer."
Briefly...
extra tire allocation for the two riders
who have to take part in both qualify-
ing sessions. Although he narrowly
missed the cut this weekend, he has
been one of the pair at the last two
races – only to run short of rubber to
make any impact in the second out-
ing. MotoGP qualifying splits riders
into two after three free practice ses-
sions, with the top 10 automatically
in Q2, and the top two in Q1 also
winning through. But the extra ses-
sion means heavier use of the allo-
cated tires. "I missed out at this race,
but I was in Q2 the last two times,"
Hayden said. "This time we were
more prepared… I had a new set of
tires for the first time. In Jerez I had
a new rear, but the problem was the
front was very used, and the rear just
pushed it. This week I had to con-
serve tires a little too much. I think
you should get an extra set, as a little
reward for getting through. I spoke to
Loris [Capirossi] in the Safety Com-
mission, and they were very recep-
tive. The feedback I got is they are
happy to do it, but they just need a
little more time."
Not everybody agrees with Hayden,
however. The rider who beat him
through this time was Cal Crutchlow,
and he was adamant – in spite of
having spent the second half of Q1 in
the pits, saving tires for Q2, watch-
ing as Hayden came within .036 of
a second of ousting him. "Being in
Q1 is one of the worst experiences.
I didn't want to use my second tire,
but by then you've given the other
riders a target. But I think the rules
are fair. If you don't get into the top
10, then that is your situation."
