which is a rare occasion for the
reigning champ, who attributes
his newfound skill to an all-new
Factory Services motor in his
KTM 350. Mullins capitalized on a
small mistake by Russell and took
over the early lead but the duo
swapped positions many times
on the opening lap. The heavy
rainfall affected some portions of
the course more than others, and
Russell experienced the worst of
it when he removed his goggles
while leading the first lap. Russell
stopped in the woods for a fresh
set of goggles costing a few po-
sitions in the process. Although
Russell only lost a couple spots
to Rocky Mountain ATV-MC/N-
Fab AmPro Yamaha's Josh Strang
and Maxxis/KLIM/DirtWise KTM
Race Team's Jason Thomas, his
unexpected stop turned into a
two-part pit because he grabbed
the wrong set of goggles the first
time.
"We got screwed up when
I stopped out in the woods for
goggles because we only had
tear-offs, so I had to stop again
on the second lap to get another
pair, so we ended up gassing a
little early," Russell said.
Since Russell only took a
small amount of fuel in his first
pit, the KTM crew was forced to
bring him in a second time on the
final lap for additional fuel. Mean-
while, Mullins made one com-
prehensive stop on the third lap,
where he received enough fuel
to last the remainder of the race.
Mullins said, "Kailub got
around me and put a little gap
on me there but I did my best to
keep him in my sight. When he
pitted on that last lap I was able
