et the battle begin. The opening round of the GEICO AMA
EnduroCross Series got off to another exciting start in front of
a standing-room-only crowd at the Orleans Arena, where all

Briefly...
Husqvarna's Mike Brown, one of
the favorites for this year's title, had
a painful start to his EnduroCross
season. He suffered a crushed little
finger on his left hand and a pos-
sible broken bone elsewhere in the
hand in his heat race after clipping
a course marker on the first lap. He
still qualified for the main and actually
pulled the $500 NEXEN Tire Hole-
shot Award, but he steadily went
backward from there and eventually
pulled off the track. "I went into the
first turn there with Taddy and caught
the inside of something when I laid it
over turning," Brown said just before
heading to the hospital. "It ripped
open my finger, exploded it. It was
bad, bad. I think I might've fractured
or did something to the bone, too.
We just bandaged it up but [then the
bandage] came off in the main and
I didn't want to get water on it and
get it infected. I think it will be okay,
nothing badly broke, hopefully just
bruised it. I feel, however, I still have
the speed and can still run up there,
so I have something good to come
away with."
This year's EnduroCross Champi-
onship features a slightly different
points system. It still uses the Su-
percross system, with first place
offering 25 points, second place
22, third place 20, fourth place 18,
fifth place 16, sixth place 15 and so
on. Now, a win in each of the three
heat races pay one point towards
the championship. Also, a point
is awarded to the top rider in the
evening's Hot Laps, where nine of
the top riders from the three heats
and LCQs are eligible to compete.
