SUPERBIKE SHOOTOUT SERIES
VOL. 51 ISSUE 18 MAY 6, 2014 P79
went around. So I was close to
pulling in [on sighting lap], but
what's the point in pulling in at
that stage. Might as well keep
going and see what happens.
And then we pulled it off after the
race… yeah, it was crazy how far
off it was, out of balance. Didn't
spin or anything. Just was never
done right in the first place. Ev-
eryone says you shouldn't be too
upset to finish fourth, but I know I
had the pace to run with the guys
up front."
Behind Anthony was Cardenas
teammate Roger Hayden, the
Kentuckian also struggling over
the weekend - not just on setup,
but also with a flu bug. Hayden
rebounded from an off-track ex-
cursion on lap two to fight back
from 16th. And while disappoint-
ed with the result, he was able to
take away some positives.
"I've been around a long time,
I know how I felt," Hayden said.
"How my head was and the bike.
It wasn't really a true test. We
were competitive at Daytona and
Fontana so I feel like we've got
the speed. I'm just looking for-
ward to Road America and get-
ting things going."
Also making up for a mistake
and charging through the pack
was KTM/HMC Racing's Chris
Fillmore, who was pushing hard
and fighting with the leaders
when he lowsided in the final turn
in the first half of the race.
"All I was focusing on was get-
ting in the lead and running up
front," Fillmore said. "And I was
just pushing way too hard. Where
I had to make up time was on
the brakes and carrying corner
speed and I just overcooked it
a little bit and lost the front end.
So I picked it up. It took awhile
to get going and kind of realized
I was catching everybody. So I
put my head down and just tried
to see how many people I could
pick off.
"I kept on picking people off
and catching people. Man, I
wish the race would've been 50
laps because the motivation that
I had behind crashing and then
having to catch back up was
good. Devastating for everyone,
but it shows that we do have the
speed. It was my mistake. I just
pushed too hard."
Also in that battle for fifth was
Team Hero AMSOIL EBR's Cory
West, who made it to this round of
the Superbike Shootout with the
help of the Northern California-
based K&L Supply. He finished
seventh even with a fourth-row
start due to a crash in qualifying.
"I got a good start, but just
didn't quite get away with the guys
I needed to go with," West said.
"Had a good battle with, shoot,
three or four guys. The pace was
decent. Could've been better like
it was yesterday, but
I had fun. Held my
own pretty much until
the end and then, un-
fortunately, Fillmore
came back after his
little tip over and got
me there at the end."
Yoshimura Su-
zuki's Chris Clark
finished eighth.
Meen Motorsport's
Tyler O'Hara finished
ninth in his Super-
bike debut and GEI-
CO Honda's Chris
Ulrich rounded out
the top 10.
