HOW THEY ARE MADE: B E L L H E L M E T S

I
t's stating the obvious but if you want to be ahead of the game
you have to have people looking down the road. And that's why
Bell created its Advanced Concepts Group that looks ahead
three to five years to develop new technologies. They're looking
at new materials and technologies and to… well, innovate.
The latest ACG baby is Bell's custom fit program that will be
available initially for the Bell Star and Moto-9 before moving to
a broader line in 2016. Bell's director of the ACG, Chris Peters,
said that previous technology for scanning a person's head for a
custom helmet could take up to 40 minutes.
Bell has found a way to do it in 15 to 30 seconds - depend-
ing on how much the person fidgets - and come within a half of
a millimeter accuracy to your head shape. That means not only
comfort and eye positioning tailored to your riding preferences
– track vs. street and goggle positioning for off road – but safety
as well. Without changing the shell size of the helmet there's an
extra two-to-10 millimeters of EPS (impact absorbing foam) .
