VOL. 51 ISSUE 14 APRIL 8, 2014 P89
1. Once marketing presents an
idea of what they are going after
the designers at Bell come up
with the concept sketches.
2. The next phase is the foam
models that are carved by hand
to capture the aesthetic direction
of the sketch. They can end up
with around 20 of these foam
models that helps them visualize
elements they want and create a
Frankenstein concept – the front
of one, the back of another…
3. After refining their direction
from the foam models the
designers move to the clay phase
for even more refinement.
4. When that design is finalized
they make a half master, make
a duplicate of it and make an
ABS (thermoplastic) model with
its rapid prototyping machines
(pictured here).
(5) Once it gets final approval the
design goes to CAD and then,
tada! – a Moto-9 is born.
DID YOU KNOW?
The Moto-9 had three designers and four
engineers working on it in the development
stage.
The Dome's rapid prototyping machines can
print anything that has a 3-D scan. So that means
anything as intricate as a motorcycle chain to
a simple crescent wrench. It's even possible to
print a polycarbonate version of your head… Eat
your heart out, Michelangelo.
There's even a mini wind tunnel at the Dome.
