day, as well, finishing seventh.
"I'm not real confident on this
type of terrain and I just couldn't
get a rhythm going and I strug-
gled on the dry, hard stuff," said
Groemm. "I just need to get more
seat time in this type of stuff. I
actually didn't think I struggled
enough to finish seventh, but I
guess I did. I wasn't very confi-
dent and when you're not confi-
dent you can't go very fast."
Count Mike Lafferty in as an-
other one of the disgruntled fin-
ishers, the eight-time National
champ and FMF/KTM rider los-
ing out in a tiebreaker to Groemm
to finish eighth.
"I've never tried so hard for
such a lousy finish," said Lafferty.
"Honesty, I have no reason for
finishing this bad. I didn't crash,
I pushed the envelope, I tried
to change the bike and noth-
ing worked. I tried to ride a gear
higher just to see if I could make
something happen, but nothing
worked. The scary thing was I felt
like I was going good, but then I'd
see the times and I would be way
off. It was pretty demoralizing."
Former National winner Cole
Kirkpatrick made a rare appear-
ance to finish ninth on a KTM,
while Brad Bakken rounded out
the top 10 on a N-FAB AmPro Ya-
maha YZ250F.
With just two rounds in the
books, Mullins holds a comfort-
able lead in the series standings
with 60 points, compared to Jes-
se Groemm's 39. Steward Bay-
lor is third overall with 36 points,
