At the first round of the season
last weekend, Mullins proved that
starts don't necessarily mean ev-
erything in GNCC racing - he was
down in turn one and charged
back to win the race. Russell
furthered the point at round two,
overcoming a bad start to pull
ahead in the second half of the
race. Russell laid down lap times
on the final two laps that were
substantially faster than his XC1
competitors, and even put in the
fastest lap time of the entire race
on the fifth and final lap.
But he wasn't alone in mak-
ing a late-race charge. Reigning
XC2 Pro Lites Champion Baylor
was trying to make history by be-
coming the first XC2 rider to win
an overall on adjusted time. On
his KTM 250 XC two-stroke, he
matched Russell's pace through-
out, and when he crossed the
finish, it looked like a near dead
heat for the overall win once the
time adjustment was factored in.
After the numbers were tallied,
he came up just four seconds
short of the overall, a fantastic
performance for the 16-year old.
"I was definitely going after the
overall and I'm upset I didn't get
it, but it was a good points ride
today," said the XC2 winner. "The
