MONSTER ENERGY AMA SUPERCROSS SERIES
VOL. 51 ISSUE 9 MARCH 4, 2014 P37
Face it. Dungey is a nice guy
- period. He's never going to fit
comfortably in the cloths of a
take-out artist or fierce under-
dog. He's a careful technician
on the track. He's rarely going
to push beyond his limit, but he'll
usually find a nice zone in which
to operate and produce qual-
ity results. When others try too
hard to overcome rutty track
conditions and or bike set up
and get sloppy in the process,
there's Dungey, ever the crafts-
man, turning in another practi-
cal and precise ride.
The Ryan Dungey of 2010
was back in the house in Indy,
the one that Peyton Manning
built, and made the seemingly
impossibly gnarly track look
at least somewhat manage-
able on his Red Bull KTM and
pulled away from the field to
win by 6.926 seconds. Joining
Dungey on Indy's podium was a
pair of riders who'd never been
there before in Eli Tomac and
fill-in Cole Seely, who finished
a surprising second and third,
respectively.
The victory, his first of 2014,
leapfrogged Dungey past
James Stewart and Ken Roc-
zen from fourth to second in the
standings, now 23-points down
to Ryan Villopoto, as the sec-
ond half of the season kicks off.
While Dungey shined and
Tomac and Seely impressed,
Indy was a tough outing for se-
ries one and two – Ryan Villopo-
to and Ken Roczen. The training
partners looked up, standing
side by side, after picking them-
selves up from a start-straight
melee in the main and both had
to be at least somewhat relieved
it was their main competitor
staring at them.
But from their unfortunate
collision the intersecting Vil-

250 main event. For Jeremy, it was
his first trip to a Supercross final.
The Rockstar Energy/Star Racing
Yamaha Team rider DNQ'ed the first
two rounds but was the fifth seed go-
ing into the main. But things didn't
go well for him in the final. He got
tripped up in the first few corners
and was dead last after a lap. He

The victory for Ryan Dungey marked
his 14th-career win and his first vic-
tory since Minneapolis last April.
That places him 14th on the all-time
AMA Supercross wins list. He's now
two wins behind Hall of Famer Jean-
Michel Bayle. Dungey's victory was
the first ever by a KTM rider in the
Indianapolis Supercross. Dungey
becomes the fifth rider of 2014 to win
a Supercross main event joining Ken
Roczen, Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed
and James Stewart. That equals the
third highest number of riders to win
after nine rounds in the history of the
series. In 1990, a total of six riders
had earned wins at this point in the
season. The record number of race
winners through nine rounds came
in 1985 when seven riders (Johnny
O'Mara, Broc Glover, Ron Lechien,
Mark Barnett, Bob Hannah, Jeff
Ward and Rick Johnson) scored vic-
tories through the first nine rounds.
