the field and win his second Na-
tional Enduro title.
This year Mullins hopes to de-
fend the crown, of course, and by
his results at the opening round,
that might not be a problem.
Rough Start
Even after taking a hard fall in
the opening test of the day, the
FMF/KTM rider still managed to
finish with the fastest time in the
10.5-mile section, edging newly
signed Husqvarna rider Russell
Bobbitt by seven seconds.
Bobbitt crashed out of the
competition in the third test, how-
ever, which ended his day. The
four-time champ was taken to the
hospital where doctors discov-
ered he had broken his kneecap.
At the end of the third test,
Mullins had opened up close
to a minute-and-a-half lead over
Jesse Groemm, who moved into
the second place slot after Bob-
bitt dropped out.
Heading into the sixth and final
test, Mullins was up by two min-
utes over Groemm when he de-
cided to back off the pace.
"I was pretty solid in the fourth
and fifth tests and I was able to
open up my gap, and then the
final test was an A-only test,
so I was pretty much breaking
trail," said Mullins. "It was kind
of sketchy so I just kind of took
it easy. I got turned around once,
but I knew I had a big enough
lead going into that last test that
I wasn't too worried. It was a
shorter test and I just focused on
finishing the test to ride it in for
the win."
