any mistakes. Robert, however,
was held up a tad at the start and
had to make a few key passes to
move up into the lead pack of rid-
ers. Jarvis also had to navigate
the first hill and lost some time as
well.
As the top riders cleared the
wreck of riders trying to navigate
Chocolate Thunder, Webb had
already pulled out a decent lead
followed by Haaker, who was still
unsure if he was disqualified at
that point or not but he trudged
on regardless. Then just back
from Haaker was Robert and Jar-
vis, who were already going at it
by mile marker seven. Redmond
would also take part in the four-
rider battle for the runner-up po-
sition during the second stage,
but later fell back at the finish.
The second stage was signifi-
cantly more challenging than the
first and plenty of riders did not
even make it to the halfway point
before the allowed time. Even
the last riders to make the cuts
finished the race right after dark.
Following the second gas stop,
Webb had pulled out a significant
lead and looked to have the race
in the bag. It wasn't until the later
stages of the race that his tire
balls started to fail in the rear, he
had to slow his pace, and was
very much at risk of losing the
race unless he maintained over a
minute gap between he and Rob-
ert. Graffunder limped his bike
into the finish but not before he
was forced to use a rock and a
stick of five-minute epoxy to re-
pair a giant oil leak. Russell had
problems on the second loop
and failed to finish the race.
At the finish of the second 36-
mile loop, Webb still had only
a two-minute lead over Robert
when the first and second stage
times were combined. Jarvis fin-
ished on the podium with third
overall, seven minutes back from
Robert when the times were add-
ed together.
