the first stage, all bikes went into impound and
only the competitors were able to do any work or
change any parts on the bike, ala the ISDE.
Going into the second stage in the afternoon,
the game was totally changed. The safety net
of staggered start times in stage one was now
turned into a mass Le Mans-style start. The fin-
ish was still calculated by when the competitor
crossed the finish line. The masses leapt into
action on a sandy hill before funneling into the
infamous rocky stair-step canyon some refer to
as Chocolate Thunder.
The start was pretty chaotic for most of the
field unless you were Beta-mounted Cody Webb.
Webb sprinted to the front from the start and mo-
tored up the extremely rocky hill with the prow-
