SEPTEMBER 29, 2013 TEUTSCHENTHAL CIRCUIT/TEUTSCHENTHAL, GERMANY MOTOCROSS P46 2013 67TH MONSTER ENERGY MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS In 1995, Belgium won. Pound-for-pound, in the era of US motocross dominance, Belgium has proven to be the greatest threat to Team USA. In the 11 MXoN events where Team USA didn't win since 1981, that tiny country of Belgium has now won six times. Moto 1: MX1+MX2 This year, the Teutschenthal Circuit in Germany seemed to provide a more equal playing field than last year's sand pit in Belgium. The track was more hardpacked but had its own unique soil and terrain. The German team was hoping to back up last year's surprising win with another on their home soil, but a repeat performance didn't seem likely this time around and would indeed not materialize, though the German fans had plenty to be excited about through out the course of the day. What also didn't seem likely was Australia's fast start to this year's race, which they did experience. For the first time in the history of the event, Team Australia came into Sunday at the Motocross of Nations as the top qualifier by virtue of MX1 team captain Brett Metcalfe winning the MX1 qualifying heat on Saturday over Team USA's Ryan Dungey, and full-time MX2 racer Dean Ferris finishing second in the MX2 qualifier behind Germany's wunderkind Ken Roczen. Ferris showed it wasn't a fluke in the MX1/MX2 opening moto, snatching the holeshot on his YZ250F in front of Swiss speedster Valentin Guillod, Roczen, Great Britain's MX1 star Tommy Searle, Belgium's Jeremy van Horebeek, and the rest of the field. Belgium's Ken de Dycker rounded lap one in 15th, just in front of Dungey and his USA teammate Eli Tomac. Dungey made great strides forward right away, and Tomac Germany's Ken Roczen was the top MX2 rider for the fourth year in a row.
