ROUND 11/SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 INTERCITY ISTANBUL PARK/ISTANBUL, TURKEY WORLD SUPERBIKE peting in the injury absence of regular rider Jonathan Rea. In the championship there are now four genuine championship contenders. But do not write off Melandri, even if Laverty leapfrogged him today. He's 33 points – his own race number, spookily – behind and there's plenty left in this one. Laverty is 26 points from Sykes; Guintoli only eight back. Plenty points for all three rounds and six races to go. Next up America, and a return to Laguna Seca. And a novelty with one race on Saturday, September 28 and one on Sunday the 29th. CN Race One 1. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) 2. Marco Melandri (BMW) 3. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) 4. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) 5. Davide Giugliano (Aprilia) 6. Toni Elias (Aprilia) 7. Jules Cluzel (Suzuki) 8. Chaz Davies (BMW) 9. Leon Haslam (Honda) 10. Michel Fabrizio (Honda) Race Two 1. Eugene Laverty (Aprilia) 2. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) 3. Sylvain Guintoli (Aprilia) 4. Marco Melandri (BMW) 5. Toni Elias (Aprilia) 6. Chaz Davies (BMW) 7. Jules Cluzel (Suzuki) 8. Leon Haslam (Honda) 9. Davide Giugliano (Aprilia) 10. Michel Fabrizio (Honda) P94 WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP Briefly... This was the second time in two weeks that Camier has had to endure hospital time, after a big crash in Germany. He was returned to the hospital on Sunday as he suffered some complications from surgery. "Leon's ridiculous run of misfortune continues and even after a successful operation he found himself back in the hospital today," his team boss Paul Denning said. "He had severe dehydration and some nasty after-effects of the surgical process. The update is that he is now resting and being very well cared for." Damian Cudlin arrived in World Supersport with the PTR team in Turkey, stoked to get the chance to run in the class he has wanted to race for some time, but also finding it hard for many reasons. "It came about because I had spoke with Simon [Buckmaster, the team owner] a few times in the past but nothing was able to come to fruition," Cudlin said. "He needed someone to fill the space here and my schedule was free for this weekend so it was a chance to get inside the paddock here a little bit. So far it has not been all rainbows and lollipops and we had a tough first day. It started off okay and then I got cleanedup, T-boned, by van der Mark so we lost a bit of that qualifying and then some of the next session. We also found out later we had some bent forks. I just need more time on the bike and more laps." Unfortunately he got few chances as his bike clutch went in the race after only three laps. Ernesto Marinelli from Ducati Corse denied there was any link between the three Ducati crashes in the first timed qualifying session in Turkey. "Carlos highsided, on the outside of the corner, whereas Ayrton was not using the soft front he normally likes because the numbers are not enough, so you have to start with a harder one to keep the softer one for the race," Marinelli explained. "He went in, it let go a little bit and when he went to change direction it was lost again." Loris Baz was all set to ride at Istanbul after getting the all clear from some of the medics he and his team had consulted, even though there was a word of caution from some other doctors. In the end it was the intervention of the local doctors in Turkey that finally made all parties involved sit down and decide to pull the 20-year-old French rider from the race. His D4 vertebra (in the center of the shoulder blades) shows signs of damage, but opinions differ on whether it is an old or new fracture. To be safe, he was withdrawn from the race. If it is a new fracture then it should show signs of healing between Istanbul and America, if an old one then scans and X-rays should be the same. Michel Fabrizio, owed money by his season-starting Red Devils Roma team and very de-motivated, took the chance to ride the Pata Honda vacated by the injury to Jonathan Rea at Istanbul. Honda wasn't sure if he could get there in time, but the deal was done and Toni Elias arrived in the Red Devils Team in his place.
