Sunday dawned, well, wet. It
was wetter than at any point in
the race meeting, some team
members resorting to makeshift
paddleboat races (no, really) in
the pitlane that was laced with
standing water.
There was no guarantee there
would even be a third race as
track conditions were far from
raceable, but late on Sunday after-
noon, the heavens cleared enough
to allow the MotoAmerica track
staff to try and clear away some
of the standing water.
As such, a 15-lap race was
scheduled for 2:49 pm, and Fong
leaped off the line to take the
holeshot, immediately opening
a one-second advantage as the
number 50 threw everything at it.
Points leader Kelly pushed
lap four, however, when his BMW
aquaplaned at turn one, sending
the number 40 down and out of
the race.
hard to keep with Fong and was
up to third, but the championship
was slipping through his fingers.
His title hopes disappeared on
Kelly ducks up
the inside of Fong
in race two. The
Yamaha's superior
corner speed versus
Kelly's BMW gave
Fong an advantage
in the wet.
