Unbeknownst to everyone but his dad, Tristan Redferrin was riding in the zone, with his dad pointing the way. Racing in the Open B class, he put himself into "stealth" mode and maneuvered his Graham KTM/ Moose/Maxxis/ Johnnie Friedli/Parts Unlimited-backed KTM into first place overall at the third round of the Mid- South Cross Country Summer Series. While many had their sights set on the 250cc A battle between Robert Patterson and Kyle Henderson, Tristan's dad, Randy, was setting his stopwatch for his son. On the next- to-last lap, he knew. "My son's winning overall," he said. Starting six classes back from the 250cc A riders, the 15-year-old from Burns, Tennessee, got a good start out front, and he simply got better. He had a trouble-free ride and moved his way into the A classes, passing the Senior A, Four-Stroke A and Light A riders, and even many of the 250cc A riders. Racing four laps, he was amazing and unstoppable. "I really want to thank God for keeping me safe," Tristan said, "and my parents for footing the bill." M e a n w h i l e , t h e 2 5 0 c c A r a c e r s w e r e plugging away, with Patterson and Henderson in the lead. Henderson got the holeshot, and the Sarge's Cycles/Kawasaki Team Green/Fox/ FMF/Dunlop-sponsored Patterson took control near the 4-mile marker. From that point on, he never looked back, and Henderson never passed him. Unfortunately for Patterson, Redferrin was plugging away in elapsed time, charging from the rear, and Patterson had no way of knowing. Patterson came in second overall, and Henderson finished the race second in the 250cc A class and third overall. "The track was awesome, and everything was good," Patterson said. "I just didn't know." "First lap, I went down about three times," said Henderson, "and I just had a lot of bad luck and couldn't get it back together. It was a fun trail, and they did a good job with the track and all, but personally, it was a bad ride." In the Open B class, Loupie Lambruno and Jordan Ashburn had amazing rides. They made all of the right moves and finished their races in fourth and fifth overall, respectively. Clay Hedgepath, Robert Adkins, Clay Stuckey and Scott Schindler enjoyed their wins in the A classes, while Tony Rooney, Dillon P h e l p s , C h r i s H u d d l e s t o n a n d C h a r l e s Cunningham were the winners of the B classes. Racing in 200cc C class, Kyle Greer celebrated his first win. Riding his KX125, he cruised into the lead on his third lap. Shortly thereafter, he had to "relive" his battle for first when Justin Robertson passed him during Greer's pit stop. PHOTO BY DEBBIE ALLEN BY JOHN HOPKINS BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, JULY 15-16 J ordan Szoke stayed on track for a history-making season with a sweep of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship double- header at Mosport International Raceway, July 15-16. The Canadian Kawasaki factory rider rode his ZX-10R to a pair of narrow victories in the Superbike events to remain unbeaten through five rounds in the feature class this year. His five victories from the start of the season tie a mark established by Steve Crevier in 1992, and with five wins in a year, he ties the record Crevier set that year, which was subsequently tied by Szoke in 2002 and by Pascal Picotte in 2004. Two races remain on the 2006 National tour. "It's just been a fantastic year," said Szoke, who is poised to clinch his third Canadian Superbike title at the next event in Nova Scotia, August 11-13. "It's almost too good to be true." Szoke had to fend off Yamaha riders in both 18-lap races around the challenging 2.5-mile Mosport circuit. In Saturday's opener, he took the lead from Team Toyota Yamaha/Picotte Performance Yamaha rider Kevin Lacombe on lap five and edged him by 0.160 seconds for the win. A resurgent Picotte was third on the other factory Yamaha YZF-R1. In Sunday's race - which, like Saturday's, was held in very hot and humid conditions - Szoke supplanted his teammate and polesitter Tom Kipp at the head of the field on lap six. This time, Picotte made the challenge, but he had to settle for second, just 0.526 seconds behind, with Lacombe right behind him in third. Szoke now carries a 67-point lead over Lacombe, 267-200, into the penultimate round at Atlantic Motorsport Park, with a maximum of 56 points available at each event. Kipp finished fourth on Sunday after placing sixth on Saturday aboard his ZX-10R. I t w a s a d i s a p p o i n t i n g w e e k e n d f o r t h e Te a m Suzuki/Blackfoot Suzuki crew. Clint McBain managed a fourth and a fifth in the two races, but teammate Francis Martin retired his GSX-R1000 early in both events with apparent engine troubles, ending any hopes he had of repeating as Parts Canada Superbike Champion. In both races, he had nailed the holeshot, and on Sunday Martin led the opening two laps. After an 11th-place finish in Calgary, Szoke restored his advantage in the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600cc Sportbike series with a pair of wins at Mosport on his ZX-6RR. On Saturday, he held off Kipp and Lacombe for the win, while on Sunday, Lacombe, Picotte and Kipp chased him home. Defending class champion Steve Crevier made a return to the series on the Ruthless Racing Yamaha YZF-R6. He finished seventh in race one but dropped out of the second while lying fifth. Fourteen-year-old rising star Brett McCormick romped to victory in the International Motorcycle Supershow Amateur 600cc Sportbike round on his Yamaha, beating points leader Karl Daigle by 11.794 seconds. The Thunder points chase tightened up considerably, as Oliver Jervis rode his BMW R1200S to a pair of narrow victories over the Buell XB9R of championship leader Darren James. In the Suzuki SV650 National Cup contest, Paul Glenn scored his second straight win, with points leader Dave Bagshaw placing second.
