Am Pro Yamaha's rookie whiz kid Charlie Mullins finished second overall and kept Kanney honest throughout the race. After overtaking Kawasaki's Travis Green, who had the holeshot and the early lead, Mullins and Kanney swapped leads in the first few laps. The turning point in the race came when Mullins took a wrong line through a mudhole, which nearly swallowed his bike whole. "On the third lap," Mullins said, "[a spectator] pointed out a line into the mudhole and it was real bad. It pretty much buried my bike up to my waist and it took me and three other guys to get it out." Mullins lost over a minute in the ordeal but didn't give up. He continued to charge hard through the remaining laps and amazingly was able to close the gap to mere seconds. But in the end, it was Kanney 's day. He took the check- ers and his first AMA win. "At the beginning of the race, I had a bit more speed than Charlie (Mullins)," Kanney said. "But he wasn't crashing like I was either. Ultimately, that mud- hole out there was the deciding factor. Had he not screwed up there he might have been able to pull it off." "I'm really happy I got my first AMA win," Kanney continued. "This is the first race in the second half of the Hare Scrambles series. This is the beginning of my comeback to get back up with Robbie (Jenks) in first place and perhaps take the championship this year." Another first happened for third- place finisher Travis Green. The Pennsylvania Hare Scrambles marked his first AMA podium finish in only his second attempt. Green finished fourth in the first round of the series in Arizona, and hopes to make his pro debut in the GNCC series next year. "It was one of my best rides in my whole career," Green said. "I got the holeshot and led a few miles. It was a good battle between the top five of us. I was lucky to come out in third and I'm just real happy with my ride. I would like to thank Team Green, my mom and dad and the Lord Jesus Christ for giving me the opportunity." KTM's Robbie Jenks finished fourth ahead of AA rider Ryan Rodger (Yamaha). Jenks was dissatisfied with his performance at Rausch Creek, lament- ing that he "should have ridden a lot better." His top-five finish, however, still allows him to maintain a strong 30- point lead in series. "I was really disappointed in my ride," Jenks said. "I'll just try to get this stuff fixed and head to the next one. I didn't hurt myself or anything like that, so I guess that's the main thing."
