SANDERSON BINGHAMTON, NY, JULY 1 A merican Classic Racing is a member-owned organization that is dedicated to the sport of Vintage motocross and off-road racing. ACR conducts AMA-sanctioned events in the north- eastern region of the United States. ACR, with the help of its sponsors RAR, Surf and Turf Rac- ing, Boyesen, Metro, Engine Ice, Hugh's Bultaco, Vintage Iron International, Dunlop Tires, World Wide Bearings Inc., Oury Grip and Works Shocks, hosts the best Vintage motocross series in the Northeast. Hurd Motorsports hosted ACR's annual visit to the beautiful Broome-Tioga Sports Center. ACR Vintage racers, as well as Veteran and Youth motocrossers on modern bikes, r a c e d t h e f u l l N a t i o n a l B r o o m e -Tioga r a c e c o u r s e . F o r o n c e , M o t h e r N a t u r e cooperated; track conditions were excellent, and rider turnout was good. Jody Zero and Tom France led the pack out of the first turn in the first combined gate of Pre-1975 Intermediate and Expert riders. Completing the top five off the start were Bob Leskanic, Robert Whitworth and Joe Bollard. France took the point position on the National hill only half a lap in; Zero was displaced to runner-up. Leskanic held a solid third. Bollard m o v e d u p t o c l a i m f o u r t h , r e l e g a t i n g Whitworth to fifth. On lap two, France went down and Zero retook the lead. France put his head down and retook the point on the white-flag lap and pulled away, taking the checkers with an unbelievable seven-second advantage. Zero, Leskanic, Bollard and Whitworth rounded out the top five. France and Zero once again led the charge out of the first turn in the final moto, with Leskanic and Bollard in tow. France came off the National hill all by himself on the first lap. Zero was off France's pace by seven seconds. France increased his advantage to 10 seconds at the checkered flag, followed by Zero, Bollard and Leskanic. Tim Weaver, Dan Borkowski, Perry Sconzert and Joe Fontana led the start of the first combined Evolution Open Intermediate and Expert moto. Weaver and Fontana quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack. Ken Napolitane, Borkowski, Scott Spano and Dave Van Pelt completed the top six at the end of lap one. Fontana made the pass for the lead 2 1/2 laps in. But Weaver was not to be denied: He retook the lead on the following lap. Weaver got the win with a three-second advantage. Fontana, Napolitane, Borkowski and Spano rounded out the top five. Weaver, Napolitane, Fontana, Borkowski and Perry Sconzert led the start of the final moto. Napolitane was the first rider to appear at the top of the National hill. Fontana and Weaver were in close pursuit. On lap two, Fontana came off the hill four seconds ahead of Napolitane in second and Weaver in third. Spano and Sconzert were fourth and fifth. F o n t a n a g o t t h e w i n w i t h a f i v e - s e c o n d cushion. Weaver passed Napolitane on the last lap to secure second. Napolitane, Spano and Sconzert completed the top five. SANDERSON BY ROBERT BEAUPRÉ GARDNERVILLE, NV, JULY 15 E ven running a pair of borrowed Hondas, local hero Nathan Tiearney looked right at home en route to topping the Dash For Cash and the 125cc and 250cc Pro main events. Tiearney, who has continued to regain speed since returning from two broken ankles last spring, kept his composure despite serious challenges from Kawasaki pilot Donnie Weber. Even after a fall early in the 250cc Pro main left him trailing, Tiearney put his head down and caught Weber, which led to one of the fiercest battles of the night. The Gardnerville grandstands erupted as Tiearney and Weber block-passed each other throughout the tight circuit, swapping the lead m u l t i p l e t i m e s . A n d a l t h o u g h T i e a r n e y prevailed at the line, Weber's performance earned him significant cheers and respect from the raucous crowd. Weber also took a tenacious second in the 125cc contest after an early miscue left him at the back of the pack on lap one. Sanchez Racing's Nick Baugh turned in solid performances despite a sore wrist to earn third in both mains. Tiearney 's Dash For Cash win was less climactic, but no less profitable. The two main- event wins earned Tiearney the bulk of the $2500 Pro purse, and the Dash For Cash win earned him $300 - or $75 per lap. Dustin Turner claimed second in the Dash, and Baugh again garnered third. The 250cc Intermediate and Schoolboy classes saw local sensation Aron Harvey ride to comfortable wins, but a first-turn cartwheel in the 125cc class put Harvey out of contention. Clayton Peterson took the point early in that class and blasted to a convincing win, ahead of Nate Vandermade and Brian Bodden. The 125cc Junior class was one of the largest and most chaotic of the night, but that d i d n' t s t o p D a k o t a M a y f r o m t a k i n g a n uneventful victory.
