C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 26, 2006 25 ber Josh Summey has had a consistent year and currently sits in ninth position, while Tim Ferry worked his way up to 10th overall in the standings with a sixth-overall performance at Red Bud, despite missing the first two rounds due to an injury. Kyle Lewis currently sits in 14th overall, which makes three of the team's riders in the top 15 and two in the top 10. "We are really starting to pick up steam," team manager Alan Brown said of the team's performance so far this year. "We are working hard, but we are just getting into the tough part of the season - hot summer days and long National motos; this is when you've really got to dig down deep. But this is the heart and soul of motocross, and we want to finish strong." FMF was the title sponsor for the Unadilla event, and longtime FMF employee and for- mer World Cham- pion Danny LaPorte was on hand to help FMF president Don Elmer promote the race. "We wanted to be a title sponsor for a race this year, and we thought that if you are going to do a spon- sorship, Unadilla would be the one to do," LaPorte said. "There is so much history here at Unadilla, and everyone loves the track so much. But we did- n't just come here because we are the title spon- sor, we came here to visit with all the teams that we sponsor. This is an exciting time of the year, because the riders are changing teams and new teams are starting up. So everyone is starting to fig- ure out where they are going to go next year, and we are a part of that process, because we help sponsor Yamaha of Troy, Motoworld.com and fac- tory KTM and some of these other teams." LaPorte said that he has special memories of the Unadilla course, especially a race with David Bailey at the World GP in 1983. "David Bailey and I had a great race here, and we talk about it all the time," LaPorte said. "That was one of the best races of my career, and if it wasn't for David and that race, part of my life wouldn't have happened." Hard rain moved over the Unadilla racetrack dur- ing Saturday's practice session, turning the rough and hilly course (and the pits) into a quagmire. Ricky Carmichael turned in the fastest lap time during the first seeded practice session, which occurred while a light rain fell. Carmichael's time was 2:18.249, while series nemesis James Stewart posted the next-fastest time, a 2:20.395. Chad Reed followed with a 2:22.825, while Nick Wey posted a 2:25.333. Just before the seeded riders went out for the second session, the really hard rains hit, causing most of the top riders, including Carmichael and Stewart, to sit out the second practice. Motocrosser- turned-WORCS off-road racer Ryan Hughes was at Unadilla, working with his riders Josh Grant and Brett Met- calfe. Ryno suf- fered a broken arm at a WORCS race just over a month ago. "I had surgery on my arm about four weeks ago, and that is healing up good," Hughes said. "However, I am having a little trouble with my shoulder right now, and I don't know if I have a torn rotator cuff or not, but if I do, then that will require another surgery. But other than that, the doctor said my arm is ahead of schedule, and I haven't stopped training, so I still feel that I am pretty fit. I don't really know when I will be back on the bike. If it is just my arm and nothing is wrong with my shoulder, then maybe four weeks." Hughes works as a trainer for Met- calfe and Grant. Former motocrosser Micky Dymond was at Unadilla to help Rockstar Suzuki's Jason Lawrence with strategy and conditioning. "Jason is right on the edge of making it big," Dymond said. "He is a good kid, and I think he is going to be successful." As usual, Racer X posted $500 to the rider who got the holeshot in each moto. In the MX division, Davi Millsaps claimed $1000 for grabbing both holeshots, while Mike Alessi and Josh Grant were the winners in the MX Lites class. Josh Summey turned 23 on the day of the Unadilla race, but it was probably a birthday he would just as soon forget, as the Stanley, North Carolina, native finished 12th in the first moto and then pulled out of moto two after a hard crash. On silly-season rumors, the word is that the Boost Mobile/Yamaha of Troy team is still unsure what riders it will either keep or sign new for next year, as a lot depends on their status with Yamaha, which is rumored to be starting an in- house YZ250F program next year. Since the team traditionally houses four riders, this leaves a large whole in the silly-season process. Andrew Short is looking forward to a return trip to his home-state track at Thunder Valley in Col- orado next weekend. "I've been riding there for two weeks, and I can't wait to get back on Monday and do it again," said Short. "I really want to win that one." New KTM team manager Casey Lytle came from KTM's testing department before being promoted to his new job. But Lytle still tests for the team. "I rode Supercross for three days last week," said Lytle, showing off a throttle-hand full of blisters. "The '07 250F has a new frame next year, and all- new plastic - the plastic on the new 450. I think it's good. It's quite a bit different, but I think it's already a step forward from this year." The 2006 Motocross des Nations is getting close, and so is the announcement of AMA Team USA, presented by Loretta Lynn's. The three-man team will be announced at Loretta's on Wednes- day night, August 2. "We think it's really cool to announce the team down at Loretta's," said AMA Motocross Series manager Steve Whitelock. "It's like everyone is getting to go back to school! Any members of the team are going to be graduates, and now they'll get to show their contemporaries what they're up to." Mike Alessi believes losing the Lites points lead for the first time this season may actually help him. "I think it's actually kind of good, because I had so much pressure on me to keep it. I would hear it every day: 'You have to do good, don't lose the points lead.' That's all I've been thinking about. It's good, [now Ryan Villopoto] has the pressure." Briefly...
